Ultrasound Tech Occupation Description

Hepler KS ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Hepler KS clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily job tasks of a sonogram technician can include:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying need for supplemental testing

Sonographers must regularly assess the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degrees Available

Hepler KS ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally take about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to finalize. Another alternative for individuals who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to bear in mind is that most sonographer programs do have a practical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which many colleges organize with Hepler KS clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to fulfill the certification or licensing requirements in Kansas or whichever state you decide to work in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Hepler KSAs earlier discussed, almost all ultrasound tech colleges have a practical component to their programs. So while you can earn a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either conducted in an on campus laboratory or at an authorized off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can often be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Hepler KS hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the rest of the classes and training may be attended online in your Hepler home. This is especially beneficial for those students that keep working while getting their degrees. In addition online programs are often less expensive than on-campus options. Expenses for commuting and study materials can be decreased also. But similarly as with any sonographer program you are looking at, make sure that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school could be the right option for you.

Questions to Ask Sonography Colleges

Questions to ask Hepler KS ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can start the process of assessing and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Hepler KS area. Clearly location will be significant if you select the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier also. But there are other factors that you must also take into account, such as if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech program prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Programs Accredited? Most ultrasound tech schools have received some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous review of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial aid and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Hepler KS health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry level positions.

Are Internships Provided? Ask if the sonogram technician schools you are reviewing have partnerships with Hepler KS hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific means to obtain practical experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Hepler health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will most likely wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new field can be challenging without help. Find out if the sonographer programs you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Kansas healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the college they pick will need to be within driving distance of their Hepler KS home. Students who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit far in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a small class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with a few of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the sonographer  program you ultimately choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you opt to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Hepler KS area, verify that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family obligations.
