Sonogram Tech Occupation Summary

Haysville KS ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Although many practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Haysville KS hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily job tasks of an ultrasound technician can consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining need for further testing

Sonographers must routinely assess the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Offered

Haysville KS ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician enrollees have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally involve around 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to finalize. Another option for individuals who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to bear in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician programs do have a practical training element as a portion of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which numerous schools organize through Haysville KS clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to satisfy the licensing or certification prerequisites in Kansas or whichever state you decide to work in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Haysville KSAs earlier discussed, virtually all sonogram technician schools have a practical component to their programs. So although you can receive a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus laboratory or at a sponsored off-campus facility. Practical training can usually be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Haysville KS outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the remainder of the training and classes may be attended online in your Haysville home. This is especially convenient for those students that continue working while earning their degrees. In addition online schools are often more affordable than on campus alternatives. Expenditures for study materials and commuting can be reduced also. But similarly as with every sonographer college you are looking at, confirm that the online school you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree could be the right choice for you.

What to Ask Sonogram Tech Programs

Questions to ask Haysville KS ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of reviewing and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Haysville KS area. Naturally location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier also. But there are additional variables that you must also take into consideration, such as if the programs are accredited and if they provide internship programs. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are some questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech college before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Colleges Accredited? The majority of ultrasound technician schools have acquired some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still important to confirm that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed examination of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Haysville KS employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Ask if the ultrasound tech colleges you are reviewing have partnerships with Haysville KS hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific means to obtain hands on training in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help students and graduates form professional relationships in the Haysville healthcare community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new field can be challenging without help. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are assessing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Kansas healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the college they choose will have to be within travelling distance of their Haysville KS residence. Students who have chosen to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit far in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the sonographer  program you ultimately select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you decide to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Haysville KS area, check that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family obligations.

    Haysville, Kansas

Haysville is a city in Sedgwick County, Kansas, United States, and a suburb of Wichita. As of the 2010 census, the city population was 10,826.[7] Haysville is known as the "Peach Capital of Kansas".[8]

W.W. Hays came to this area in the early 1870s. In 1891, he platted land that he owned so a town could be built.[9] The Haysville State Bank was established in 1919.[10] Truck farming supported a lot of the families in the area. In 1874 a grist mill was built on the bank of the Cowskin to process corn that was harvested in the area. Haysville's first school was built in 1876 at a location that may have been near what are now the Water Department facilities. Haysville appears in Colton's New Sectional Map of the State of Kansas as early as 1879.[11]

In 1887, the Chicago, Kansas and Nebraska Railway Company built a branch line north-south from Herington through Haysville to Caldwell.[12] It was renamed in 1891 to Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railway which shut down in 1980, renamed in 1980 to Oklahoma, Kansas and Texas Railroad, merged in 1988 to Missouri Pacific Railroad, merged in 1997 to the current Union Pacific Railroad. Most locals still refer to this railroad as the "Rock Island". In 1903 a depot was opened and passenger trains shuttled people to and from Wichita.
