Sonogram Tech Work Description

Goddard KS ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Goddard KS hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily work duties of an ultrasound technician can consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining need for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently evaluate the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Offered

Goddard KS ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the choice to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually take about 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to finalize. Another option for those who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to keep in mind is that most ultrasound technician colleges do have a clinical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which many colleges set up with Goddard KS hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to comply with the certification or licensing prerequisites in Kansas or whichever state you decide to practice in.

Ultrasound Tech Online Programs

student attending online sonography class in Goddard KSAs previously mentioned, almost all ultrasound tech schools have a practical component to their programs. So while you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either held in an on campus lab or at an approved off campus facility. Practical training can often be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Goddard KS outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the rest of the classes and training may be attended online in your Goddard home. This is especially convenient for those students that keep working while getting their degrees. In addition online colleges are often less costly than traditional alternatives. Expenditures for commuting and study materials can be decreased as well. But similarly as with every sonographer program you are looking at, make sure that the online program you choose is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree could be the ideal choice for you.

Topics to Ask Sonogram Tech Programs

Questions to ask Goddard KS ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the procedure of evaluating and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You may first want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Goddard KS area. Naturally location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualification also. But there are additional variables that you should also take into consideration, for example if the schools are accredited and if they offer internships. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are some questions that you need ask each sonography college prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Programs Accredited? The majority of ultrasound tech schools have acquired some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still important to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous review of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in getting financial aid and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Goddard KS health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Ask if the ultrasound technician schools you are reviewing have partnerships with Goddard KS hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific way to obtain practical experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help students and graduates form professional relationships in the Goddard healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that first job in a new field can be challenging without assistance. Find out if the sonographer schools you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Kansas healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the school they select will have to be within travelling distance of their Goddard KS home. Students who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit far in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with several of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the sonographer  college you ultimately choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Goddard KS area, check that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.
