Sonographer Job Description

Gem KS ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority practice in Gem KS hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily job functions of a sonogram technician may include:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining necessity for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently assess the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education training on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Available

Gem KS ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the option to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically take about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to finish. Another alternative for individuals who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to consider is that the majority of sonographer schools do have a practical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which many colleges set up through Gem KS clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to comply with the certification or licensing prerequisites in Kansas or whichever state you choose to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Gem KSAs aforementioned, virtually all ultrasound tech colleges have a practical component to their programs. So while you can earn a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either held in an on-campus lab or at an authorized off campus facility. Practical training can often be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Gem KS outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the rest of the training and classes may be attended online in your Gem home. This is especially beneficial for those students that keep working while earning their degrees. In addition online programs are frequently less costly than on campus options. Costs for study materials and commuting may be lessened also. But similarly as with any ultrasound tech college you are reviewing, check that the online school you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes could be the right option for you.

Subjects to Ask Sonography Schools

Questions to ask Gem KS ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the procedure of evaluating and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you will access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Gem KS area. Of course location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier as well. But there are other variables that you should also take into consideration, for instance if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each sonography college prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Schools Accredited? A large number of ultrasound technician schools have acquired some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still important to verify that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive evaluation of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also help in securing financial aid and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Gem KS employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are assessing have associations with Gem KS hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great means to get practical training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they may assist students and graduates form professional connections in the Gem health care community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will most likely wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that first job in a new field can be challenging without support. Ask if the sonographer programs you are assessing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Kansas healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the school they choose will need to be within travelling distance of their Gem KS residence. Students who have decided to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that prefers to sit way in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with several of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program also.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  school you ultimately pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you choose to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Gem KS area, confirm that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.
