They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Frontenac KS hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily job tasks of a sonogram tech may include:

  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying need for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently assess the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Offered

Frontenac KS ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually take around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to finish. Another alternative for individuals who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to consider is that the majority of ultrasound technician programs do have a practical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by entering into an internship program which numerous schools set up through Frontenac KS clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to fulfill the certification or licensing requirements in Kansas or whichever state you decide to work in.

Ultrasound Tech Online Classes

student attending online sonography class in Frontenac KSAs previously mentioned, nearly all ultrasound tech colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either carried out in an on campus lab or at an authorized off-campus facility. Clinical training can usually be fulfilled through an internship at a local Frontenac KS outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the balance of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Frontenac home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that continue working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online schools are often less expensive than on-campus alternatives. Expenses for commuting and study materials can be decreased also. But similarly as with any ultrasound tech program you are reviewing, verify that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the right option for you.

What to Ask Ultrasound Technician Colleges

Questions to ask Frontenac KS ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can start the process of evaluating and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You may first want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Frontenac KS area. Obviously location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are other variables that you should also take into account, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internship programs. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each sonography program prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Colleges Accredited? A large number of sonogram tech schools have received some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still important to confirm that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous assessment of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Frontenac KS employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Sponsored? Ask if the sonogram technician schools you are evaluating have relationships with Frontenac KS clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great way to get practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may assist graduates and students form professional connections in the Frontenac healthcare community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will most likely wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without help. Find out if the sonographer schools you are considering have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Kansas healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the school they select will need to be within driving distance of their Frontenac KS home. Individuals who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit far in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with several of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  college you finally choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Frontenac KS area, confirm that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.
