Sonogram Tech Job Description

Emporia KS ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Emporia KS clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily job duties of a sonogram technician may include:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining need for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly evaluate the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Offered

Emporia KS ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician enrollees have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally take about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to complete. Another option for those who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to keep in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician programs do have a practical training element as a portion of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by entering into an internship program which many colleges organize with Emporia KS clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to comply with the certification or licensing requirements in Kansas or whatever state you elect to work in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Classes

student attending online sonography class in Emporia KSAs earlier discussed, almost all sonogram technician colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can earn a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus lab or at an approved off-campus facility. Practical training can often be satisfied through an internship at a local Emporia KS outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the rest of the training and classes can be attended online in your Emporia home. This is especially convenient for those students that continue working while earning their degrees. In addition online colleges are frequently more affordable than on-campus options. Costs for study materials and commuting may be lessened also. But similarly as with every ultrasound tech program you are reviewing, check that the online school you select is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes may be the ideal choice for you.

Topics to Ask Sonography Schools

Questions to ask Emporia KS ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can initiate the process of reviewing and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Emporia KS area. Of course location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualification also. But there are additional variables that you should also take into account, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they provide internships. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each sonography college before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Colleges Accredited? The majority of ultrasound tech schools have earned some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still imperative to verify that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive examination of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Emporia KS employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Find out if the ultrasound technician colleges you are reviewing have associations with Emporia KS hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent means to get hands on training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help graduates and students establish professional connections in the Emporia healthcare community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that first job in a new profession can be challenging without support. Ask if the sonographer programs you are considering have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Kansas healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the school they pick will have to be within commuting distance of their Emporia KS home. Students who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that prefers to sit far in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program also.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the sonographer  college you ultimately select can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you choose to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Emporia KS area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family obligations.

    Emporia, Kansas

Emporia is a city in and the county seat of Lyon County, Kansas, United States.[1][7] As of the 2010 census, the city population was 24,916.[8] Emporia lies between Topeka and Wichita at the intersection of U.S. Route 50 with Interstates 335 and 35 on the Kansas Turnpike. Emporia is also a college town, home to Emporia State University and Flint Hills Technical College.

In 1864 the Union Pacific Railway, Southern Branch (later incorporated into the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad) received land grants to build from Fort Riley to Emporia. The road eventually reached Emporia in 1869, becoming the first railroad to served the burgeoning town.[10] In July 1870, a second railroad, the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway reached Emporia, and in the years following the American Civil War the city became a booming railroad hub.[11] In 1888, railroad executive and educator John Byers Anderson donated his personal library to the College of Emporia to commemorate his 50th wedding anniversary, and his former mentee Andrew Carnegie donated additional funds to build a library in Anderson's honor (conditioned upon the new college paying off its mortgage).[12]

Emporia is particularly known for its newspaper, the Emporia Gazette, published in the first half of the 20th century by the legendary newspaperman William Allen White. The paper became the widely perceived model of excellence in small-town journalism.
