Ultrasound Technician Job Description

Deerfield KS ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. While many practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Deerfield KS clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily work tasks of an ultrasound technician can include:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining need for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely evaluate the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Available

Deerfield KS ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician students have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally involve about 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to finalize. Another option for those who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to bear in mind is that almost all ultrasound technician schools do have a clinical training component as part of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by participating in an internship program which many schools sponsor through Deerfield KS clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to satisfy the licensing or certification requirements in Kansas or whichever state you elect to work in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Deerfield KSAs earlier discussed, nearly all ultrasound technician schools have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can earn a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either held in an on campus laboratory or at an approved off campus facility. Practical training can typically be satisfied through an internship at a local Deerfield KS outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the balance of the training and classes may be attended online in your Deerfield home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that continue working while earning their degrees. Plus online programs are many times less expensive than on-campus options. Expenditures for commuting and study materials can be decreased as well. But similarly as with every sonographer college you are considering, confirm that the online school you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal option for you.

What to Ask Sonogram Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Deerfield KS ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can start the procedure of reviewing and comparing sonogram technician schools. You may first want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Deerfield KS area. Certainly location will be significant if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualification as well. But there are additional variables that you must also take into account, for example if the programs are accredited and if they provide internship programs. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are a few questions that you need ask each sonography school before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Schools Accredited? Most sonogram tech schools have obtained some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still important to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive examination of their teachers and course materials. If the school is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial aid and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Deerfield KS health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Offered? Inquire if the sonogram technician schools you are interested in have partnerships with Deerfield KS hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent manner to get practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help students and graduates establish professional connections in the Deerfield healthcare community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will most likely wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that first job in a new profession can be difficult without help. Ask if the sonographer programs you are considering have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Kansas healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the school they pick will have to be within commuting distance of their Deerfield KS residence. Individuals who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit way in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the sonographer  school you ultimately choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Deerfield KS area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.
