Sonogram Tech Work Summary

Blue Mound KS ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. While many work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Blue Mound KS hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily job functions of a sonogram tech can involve:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying need for further testing

Sonographers must routinely gauge the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education training on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Offered

Blue Mound KS ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally take about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to finalize. Another option for individuals who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to keep in mind is that most ultrasound technician colleges do have a practical training element as part of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which many schools sponsor through Blue Mound KS hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to fulfill the licensing or certification prerequisites in Kansas or whatever state you elect to practice in.

Online Sonogram Tech Programs

student attending online sonography class in Blue Mound KSAs previously mentioned, nearly all sonogram tech colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either held in an on-campus lab or at an authorized off campus facility. Clinical training can typically be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Blue Mound KS hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the balance of the training and classes can be attended online in your Blue Mound home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that keep working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online colleges are many times less costly than on-campus alternatives. Costs for study materials and commuting may be decreased also. But just as with every ultrasound tech school you are reviewing, verify that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree may be the right choice for you.

Questions to Ask Sonogram Tech Schools

Questions to ask Blue Mound KS ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of evaluating and comparing sonogram technician colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Blue Mound KS area. Obviously location will be critical if you select the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification also. But there are other things that you must also take into consideration, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internships. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech school before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Schools Accredited? Most ultrasound tech colleges have acquired some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still important to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed evaluation of their teachers and educational materials. If the college is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also help in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Blue Mound KS employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level openings.

Are Internships Provided? Find out if the ultrasound technician colleges you are assessing have relationships with Blue Mound KS hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great means to obtain hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help graduates and students form professional connections in the Blue Mound medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will most likely wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that first job in a new profession can be difficult without help. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Kansas healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the college they choose will have to be within driving distance of their Blue Mound KS home. Those who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that prefers to sit far in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a small class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with several of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the sonographer  college you finally pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Blue Mound KS area, make certain that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.
