  • Preserving records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort

Ultrasound techs must routinely assess the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degrees Offered

Arkansas City KS ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician enrollees have the option to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually take about 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to complete. Another alternative for individuals who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to bear in mind is that the majority of sonographer schools do have a clinical training element as part of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which many schools sponsor through Arkansas City KS clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to fulfill the certification or licensing prerequisites in Kansas or whatever state you choose to work in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Arkansas City KSAs previously mentioned, nearly all sonogram technician colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can earn a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus laboratory or at an authorized off-campus facility. Clinical training can usually be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Arkansas City KS hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the remainder of the training and classes can be attended online in your Arkansas City home. This is especially beneficial for those students that continue working while earning their degrees. In addition online colleges are often less costly than on-campus options. Expenses for commuting and study materials may be decreased as well. But similarly as with any sonographer school you are looking at, confirm that the online program you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes could be the right option for you.

You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Arkansas City KS area. Naturally location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification also. But there are additional factors that you must also take into consideration, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are several questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech school prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Colleges Accredited? Most ultrasound technician schools have acquired some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive evaluation of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Arkansas City KS health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level jobs.

Are Internships Provided? Inquire if the sonogram technician colleges you are reviewing have relationships with Arkansas City KS clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific means to get practical experience in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help graduates and students establish professional connections in the Arkansas City medical community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new field can be challenging without help. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Kansas healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the school they choose will need to be within driving distance of their Arkansas City KS residence. Those who have opted to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit far in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with several of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the sonographer  college you ultimately choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Arkansas City KS area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family emergencies.

    Arkansas City, Kansas

Arkansas City (/ɑːrˈkænzəs/)[6] is a city in Cowley County, Kansas, United States, situated at the confluence of the Arkansas and Walnut rivers in the southwestern part of the county. As of the 2010 census, the city population was 12,415.[7]

The name of this city is not pronounced like the nearby state of Arkansas, but rather as /ɑːrˈkænzəs/ (the final "s" is pronounced). Over the years there has been much confusion about the regional pronunciation of "Arkansas", which locals render as /ɑːrˈkænzəs/ rather than /ˈɑːrkənsɔː/.[8] Throughout much of Kansas, residents use this alternative pronunciation when referring to the Arkansas River, as well as Arkansas Street in the city of Wichita.

In 1601, New Mexico Governor Juan de Oñate led an expedition across the Great Plains and found a large settlement of Indians he called Rayados. They lived along the Walnut River in the eastern part of Arkansas City. Extensive remains of Indian settlements have been found along six miles (9.7 km) of the Walnut River. The Rayados were the ancestors of the Indians later called Wichita. Wichita settlements from the 18th century are also found a few miles south of Arkansas City on the west bank of the Arkansas River.[10]
