Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school may be the right option for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Tech Schools

Questions to ask Arcadia KS ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of evaluating and comparing sonogram technician colleges. You may first want to decide whether you will attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Arcadia KS area. Of course location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification as well. But there are additional things that you must also take into consideration, such as if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internships. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech program before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Programs Accredited? A large number of sonogram tech colleges have acquired some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still imperative to confirm that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive examination of their teachers and educational materials. If the college is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Arcadia KS health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Ask if the ultrasound tech colleges you are assessing have partnerships with Arcadia KS clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent way to obtain hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can assist students and graduates develop professional connections in the Arcadia health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that first job in a new field can be challenging without support. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Kansas healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the school they decide on will have to be within commuting distance of their Arcadia KS home. Those who have opted to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit way in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the ultrasound tech  college you finally select can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you choose to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Arcadia KS area, confirm that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family emergencies.
