Sonographer Work Description

Americus KS ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most practice in Americus KS clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily work duties of an ultrasound tech may consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining necessity for supplemental testing

Sonographers must routinely gauge the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Offered

Americus KS ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the choice to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally involve about 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to finish. Another alternative for individuals who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to consider is that the majority of ultrasound technician colleges do have a practical training element as part of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by participating in an internship program which numerous colleges set up through Americus KS hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to fulfill the licensing or certification requirements in Kansas or whichever state you decide to work in.

Sonogram Tech Online Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Americus KSAs earlier discussed, virtually all sonogram tech schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either held in an on-campus laboratory or at an authorized off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can typically be satisfied through an internship at a local Americus KS outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. However the remainder of the training and classes may be attended online in your Americus home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that continue working while getting their degrees. In addition online programs are often less expensive than traditional alternatives. Expenditures for commuting and study materials may be decreased as well. But similarly as with every sonographer school you are looking at, verify that the online program you select is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes may be the ideal option for you.

Topics to Ask Ultrasound Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Americus KS ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of assessing and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Americus KS area. Certainly location will be significant if you select the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification as well. But there are other factors that you should also take into consideration, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internships. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonographer school prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Colleges Accredited? Most sonogram technician colleges have earned some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive examination of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Americus KS health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Inquire if the ultrasound technician colleges you are evaluating have associations with Americus KS hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific means to obtain hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are also a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help graduates and students develop professional relationships in the Americus medical community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Kansas healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the college they decide on will have to be within driving distance of their Americus KS home. Individuals who have opted to attend classes online obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit way in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  program you finally pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you choose to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Americus KS area, check that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.
