Most work in Altoona KS hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily job tasks of a sonogram tech can involve:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining necessity for further testing

Sonographers must regularly assess the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Available

Altoona KS ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician enrollees have the option to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically take around 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to finalize. Another option for those who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to keep in mind is that the majority of sonographer schools do have a practical training component as part of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by participating in an internship program which many colleges sponsor through Altoona KS clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to comply with the licensing or certification requirements in Kansas or whichever state you elect to work in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Schools

student attending online sonography class in Altoona KSAs previously mentioned, nearly all ultrasound technician colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus laboratory or at a sponsored off-campus facility. Clinical training can usually be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Altoona KS hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the remainder of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Altoona home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that keep working while getting their degrees. In addition online colleges are often less costly than on-campus options. Expenses for commuting and study materials may be lessened also. But just as with every sonography college you are reviewing, make sure that the online program you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal choice for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Technician Schools

Questions to ask Altoona KS ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have decided on the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the procedure of reviewing and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Altoona KS area. Obviously location will be important if you select the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification as well. But there are other variables that you must also take into account, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internship programs. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are some questions that you need ask each sonography program prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Schools Accredited? Most ultrasound technician schools have acquired some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to confirm that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous examination of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Altoona KS health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Inquire if the ultrasound technician colleges you are evaluating have associations with Altoona KS hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great way to obtain practical training in a clinical setting, they are also a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help students and graduates form professional connections in the Altoona health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that first job in a new field can be challenging without assistance. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are considering have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Kansas healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the school they choose will need to be within commuting distance of their Altoona KS residence. Those who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit way in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with a few of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  program you finally pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you choose to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Altoona KS area, check that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.
