Sonographer Occupation Summary

Okeechobee FL ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Okeechobee FL clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily work duties of an ultrasound tech may include:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying need for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly evaluate the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Offered

Okeechobee FL ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician enrollees have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally involve about 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to finalize. Another option for those who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. Something to consider is that most ultrasound technician colleges do have a practical training element as part of their curriculum. Once you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to fulfill the licensing or certification requirements in Florida or whichever state you decide to work in.

Sonogram Tech Online Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Okeechobee FLAs previously mentioned, nearly all ultrasound technician schools have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus lab or at an authorized off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can typically be satisfied through an internship at a local Okeechobee FL hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the rest of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Okeechobee home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that continue working while earning their degrees. In addition online colleges are many times less expensive than traditional alternatives. Expenses for commuting and study materials can be lessened as well. But similarly as with every ultrasound tech college you are looking at, check that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes could be the right choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Sonography Schools

Questions to ask Okeechobee FL ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can initiate the procedure of assessing and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You may first want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Okeechobee FL area. Obviously location will be significant if you select the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification also. But there are other things that you should also take into consideration, for instance if the schools are accredited and if they offer internships. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each sonography college before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Schools Accredited? The majority of ultrasound tech schools have received some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still crucial to verify that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed assessment of their instructors and educational materials. If the program is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial aid and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Okeechobee FL employers will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level positions.

Are Internships Sponsored? Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are evaluating have associations with Okeechobee FL clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great means to obtain practical experience in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may assist graduates and students develop professional relationships in the Okeechobee healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will undoubtedly wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new field can be challenging without support. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are considering have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Florida healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the school they select will need to be within commuting distance of their Okeechobee FL home. Individuals who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit far in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with a few of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the sonographer  program you finally select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Okeechobee FL area, confirm that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family obligations.
