Sonographer Occupation Summary

Dagsboro DE ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though many work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Dagsboro DE hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily work tasks of a sonogram technician may include:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying need for further testing

Sonographers must regularly gauge the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to maintain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Offered

Dagsboro DE ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally require about 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to finish. Another alternative for individuals who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to consider is that almost all sonographer programs do have a clinical training element as a portion of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by entering into an internship program which numerous colleges set up with Dagsboro DE hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to fulfill the licensing or certification requirements in Delaware or whichever state you decide to practice in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Classes

student attending online sonography class in Dagsboro DEAs aforementioned, nearly all ultrasound tech colleges have a practical component to their programs. So while you can earn a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus lab or at a sponsored off-campus facility. Clinical training can usually be fulfilled through an internship at a local Dagsboro DE outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the balance of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Dagsboro home. This is especially beneficial for those students that continue working while earning their degrees. In addition online programs are frequently less expensive than on campus alternatives. Costs for commuting and study materials may be reduced as well. But just as with any sonography college you are looking at, confirm that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes could be the right choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Ultrasound Technician Schools

Questions to ask Dagsboro DE ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can initiate the process of reviewing and comparing sonogram tech schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you will attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Dagsboro DE area. Certainly location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier as well. But there are other factors that you must also take into consideration, for instance if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internship programs. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each sonography program before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Colleges Accredited? A large number of ultrasound technician schools have received some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still important to make sure that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous examination of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also help in getting financial aid and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Dagsboro DE employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Ask if the sonogram tech schools you are interested in have relationships with Dagsboro DE hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great way to get practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help students and graduates establish professional relationships in the Dagsboro health care community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without help. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are assessing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Delaware healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the college they choose will have to be within commuting distance of their Dagsboro DE residence. Individuals who have opted to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of person that prefers to sit far in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the sonographer  college you ultimately pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Dagsboro DE area, confirm that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family obligations.
