Sonographer Job Summary

East Haven CT ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although many practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in East Haven CT hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily job duties of a sonogram technician may consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining necessity for additional testing

Sonographers must routinely gauge the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Available

East Haven CT ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually take around 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to finalize. Another alternative for individuals who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to consider is that almost all ultrasound technician colleges do have a practical training component as a portion of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which many schools sponsor with East Haven CT hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to satisfy the licensing or certification prerequisites in Connecticut or whichever state you elect to practice in.

Online Sonographer Degrees

student attending online sonography class in East Haven CTAs earlier discussed, nearly all sonogram technician schools have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can receive a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either conducted in an on campus lab or at a sponsored off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can typically be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local East Haven CT outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the remainder of the training and classes may be attended online in your East Haven home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that keep working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online programs are often less expensive than traditional alternatives. Costs for commuting and study materials may be lessened also. But just as with every ultrasound tech school you are reviewing, check that the online program you choose is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the right option for you.

Questions to Ask Sonogram Tech Schools

Questions to ask East Haven CT ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can start the procedure of assessing and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the East Haven CT area. Of course location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are additional variables that you must also take into account, such as if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonographer program prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Schools Accredited? A large number of ultrasound technician schools have acquired some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still important to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive examination of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many East Haven CT health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level openings.

Are Internships Provided? Find out if the ultrasound technician programs you are assessing have relationships with East Haven CT clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent manner to receive hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can assist students and graduates form professional relationships in the East Haven healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that first job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Find out if the sonographer schools you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Connecticut healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the school they pick will need to be within travelling distance of their East Haven CT residence. Students who have opted to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit far in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with some of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the ultrasound tech  program you ultimately select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the East Haven CT area, verify that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family obligations.

    East Haven, Connecticut

East Haven is a town in New Haven County, Connecticut, in the United States. As of the 2010 census, the town population was 29,257.[1] Located 3 miles (5 km) east of New Haven, it is part of the Greater New Haven area. East Haven is 35 miles (56 km) from Hartford, 82 miles (132 km) from New York City, 99 miles (159 km) from Providence, Rhode Island, and 140 miles (230 km) from Boston.

The Connecticut Colony granted the town petition for Township in May 1707 and colonists changed the name from Iron Works Village to East Haven. Some outstanding land issues with New Haven and a minor feud with Governor Gurdon Saltonstall resulted in the rescinding of the township status; the area was made a parish of New Haven.[2]

New Haven and neighboring towns such as East Haven have been destinations for a new wave of immigrants since the late 20th century, the majority of whom in East Haven are Latinos from Ecuador.[3] In the 2010 census, Hispanics and Latinos made up more than 10% of the town's population.
