Sonographer Work Description

Mira Loma CA ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Even though many practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Mira Loma CA hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily work functions of a sonogram tech may include:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining necessity for supplemental testing

Sonographers must frequently evaluate the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Offered

An Associate Degree will generally require about 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to complete. Another option for individuals who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to consider is that the majority of ultrasound technician schools do have a clinical training element as part of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which numerous colleges sponsor through Mira Loma CA clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to fulfill the licensing or certification requirements in California or whichever state you decide to work in.

But the remainder of the training and classes may be attended online in your Mira Loma home. This is especially beneficial for those students that keep working while getting their degrees. Plus online colleges are many times less expensive than traditional alternatives. Costs for study materials and commuting may be lessened also. But similarly as with every ultrasound tech school you are reviewing, check that the online school you select is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree could be the right choice for you.

Topics to Ask Ultrasound Technician Schools

Questions to ask Mira Loma CA ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of assessing and comparing sonogram technician schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you will access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Mira Loma CA area. Obviously location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification as well. But there are additional factors that you should also take into consideration, such as if the schools are accredited and if they provide internships. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each sonography college before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Schools Accredited? Most ultrasound tech colleges have obtained some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still important to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive examination of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial aid and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Mira Loma CA health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Inquire if the ultrasound tech colleges you are interested in have partnerships with Mira Loma CA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a great means to receive practical training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can assist graduates and students establish professional relationships in the Mira Loma healthcare community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will probably want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that first job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with California healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the school they decide on will have to be within driving distance of their Mira Loma CA home. Individuals who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that prefers to sit far in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  school you ultimately select can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Mira Loma CA area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family obligations.
