Ultrasound Technician Job Description

Carnelian Bay CA ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though many practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Carnelian Bay CA hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily work duties of an ultrasound technician can involve:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining necessity for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently gauge the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education training on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Offered

Carnelian Bay CA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician enrollees have the option to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically take about 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finalize. Another option for individuals who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to consider is that the majority of sonographer colleges do have a practical training element as part of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which numerous schools sponsor with Carnelian Bay CA hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to satisfy the certification or licensing prerequisites in California or whatever state you choose to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Programs

student attending online sonography class in Carnelian Bay CAAs previously mentioned, virtually all sonogram tech schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can receive a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either held in an on-campus laboratory or at an approved off-campus facility. Clinical training can typically be fulfilled through an internship at a local Carnelian Bay CA hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the rest of the classes and training may be attended online in your Carnelian Bay home. This is especially beneficial for those students that continue working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online schools are many times less costly than on-campus alternatives. Expenditures for study materials and commuting may be reduced as well. But similarly as with any sonography program you are considering, confirm that the online school you choose is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the right choice for you.

Topics to Ask Ultrasound Technician Schools

Questions to ask Carnelian Bay CA ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can start the procedure of evaluating and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a college campus in the Carnelian Bay CA area. Clearly location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification also. But there are additional things that you must also take into account, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internship programs. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are a few questions that you need ask each sonographer program prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Colleges Accredited? A large number of sonogram tech colleges have received some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still imperative to verify that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous review of their instructors and educational materials. If the program is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Carnelian Bay CA health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level jobs.

Are Internships Offered? Inquire if the sonogram technician schools you are evaluating have relationships with Carnelian Bay CA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great means to obtain practical training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help graduates and students develop professional relationships in the Carnelian Bay healthcare community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new field can be challenging without support. Find out if the sonographer programs you are considering have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with California healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the school they pick will need to be within travelling distance of their Carnelian Bay CA home. Those who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit far in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the sonographer  school you ultimately choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Carnelian Bay CA area, check that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family obligations.
