Sonogram Tech Work Summary

Winslow AR ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Even though many practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Winslow AR clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily work duties of a sonogram tech can consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying necessity for additional testing

Sonographers must regularly gauge the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Offered

Winslow AR ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician students have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally require around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to complete. Another option for those who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to bear in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician colleges do have a practical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which many schools organize with Winslow AR clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to satisfy the certification or licensing requirements in Arkansas or whichever state you choose to work in.

Online Sonographer Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Winslow ARAs earlier discussed, nearly all sonogram technician colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can receive a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either carried out in an on campus laboratory or at a sponsored off campus facility. Clinical training can typically be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Winslow AR hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the rest of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Winslow home. This is especially beneficial for those students that continue working while earning their degrees. In addition online colleges are many times more affordable than on-campus options. Expenses for study materials and commuting can be decreased as well. But just as with every sonographer college you are looking at, check that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree could be the ideal option for you.

Points to Ask Sonography Programs

Questions to ask Winslow AR ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of evaluating and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Winslow AR area. Of course location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are additional variables that you must also take into account, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they provide internship programs. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are a few questions that you need ask each sonographer school prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Colleges Accredited? Most sonogram tech colleges have acquired some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still important to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous review of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Winslow AR employers will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Ask if the sonogram tech programs you are evaluating have associations with Winslow AR hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great manner to obtain practical training in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Winslow medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without support. Find out if the sonographer schools you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Arkansas healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the college they select will have to be within travelling distance of their Winslow AR residence. Those who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit far in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to speak with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the sonographer  college you ultimately choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Winslow AR area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.

A stagecoach stop for many years, the community now known as Winslow first received a post office on December 11, 1876, known as Summit Home. Winslow, president of the Frisco Railroad.[3] The town became a somewhat resort town for its picturesque peaks at the end of the 19th century, drawing many wealthy from the Fort Smith area to summer there. It was incorporated on February 17, 1905.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.9 square miles (4.9 km2), all land. Winslow is 12 miles (19 km) east of Devil's Den State Park, along Arkansas Highway 74.[6]
