Ultrasound Tech Occupation Summary

Rivervale AR ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Rivervale AR clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily job functions of an ultrasound tech may include:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining necessity for further testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly evaluate the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education training on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Available

Rivervale AR ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician enrollees have the option to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually take about 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to finish. Another option for individuals who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to consider is that the majority of ultrasound technician schools do have a practical training component as part of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which numerous colleges organize with Rivervale AR hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to satisfy the certification or licensing requirements in Arkansas or whichever state you decide to work in.

Ultrasound Tech Online Programs

student attending online sonography class in Rivervale ARAs previously mentioned, nearly all sonogram tech schools have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can receive a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus lab or at a sponsored off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can typically be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Rivervale AR outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the rest of the classes and training can be attended online in your Rivervale home. This is especially beneficial for those students that keep working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online programs are many times less costly than on campus options. Expenses for study materials and commuting may be lessened also. But similarly as with any sonography school you are looking at, verify that the online program you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes could be the right choice for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Technician Programs

Questions to ask Rivervale AR ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of evaluating and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you will access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Rivervale AR area. Certainly location will be important if you select the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier as well. But there are additional factors that you should also take into consideration, for example if the schools are accredited and if they offer internships. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonography school before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Colleges Accredited? Most sonogram tech colleges have earned some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still crucial to verify that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous assessment of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Rivervale AR employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Ask if the sonogram tech colleges you are evaluating have partnerships with Rivervale AR hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent means to obtain hands on training in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help graduates and students develop professional relationships in the Rivervale medical community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new field can be difficult without support. Ask if the sonographer schools you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Arkansas healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the school they pick will have to be within travelling distance of their Rivervale AR home. Those who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit far in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with some of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  school you ultimately select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Rivervale AR area, check that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.

    Rivervale Inverted Siphons

The Rivervale Inverted Siphons, also known as the Rivervale Tunnel, are a historic flood control project in rural Poinsett County, Arkansas. It is essentially a very large concrete culvert, which channels the water flow of Ditch Number 4 under the Right Hand Chute Little River, into which it would normally drain. It is located just off Arkansas Highway 135 in northeastern Poinsett County, near its junctions with County Roads 87 and 112. Built in 1924-26, the purpose of the culvert was to reduce the amount of water carried by the Right Hand Chute during major flooding events by diverting the volume of Ditch Number 4 further downstream. As part of a robust series of flood control works, it helped stabilize flood management in the area so that further economic development could take place.[2]
