Sonographer Work Description

Natural Dam AR ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Although a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most practice in Natural Dam AR clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily job duties of an ultrasound tech may involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying need for additional testing

Sonographers must routinely gauge the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Offered

Natural Dam AR ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the choice to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically involve around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to finish. Another alternative for those who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to consider is that almost all ultrasound technician colleges do have a practical training component as part of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which many colleges set up with Natural Dam AR clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to comply with the certification or licensing requirements in Arkansas or whichever state you elect to practice in.

Online Sonographer Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Natural Dam ARAs earlier discussed, nearly all ultrasound tech schools have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus lab or at a sponsored off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can often be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Natural Dam AR outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. However the rest of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Natural Dam home. This is especially convenient for those students that continue working while getting their degrees. In addition online schools are frequently less expensive than on campus options. Expenses for study materials and commuting can be decreased also. But just as with any sonography program you are reviewing, verify that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree could be the ideal choice for you.

Questions to Ask Sonography Programs

Questions to ask Natural Dam AR ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can start the process of assessing and comparing sonogram technician schools. You may first want to decide whether you will attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Natural Dam AR area. Obviously location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are other variables that you must also take into consideration, such as if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internships. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonographer program prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Programs Accredited? The majority of ultrasound technician schools have obtained some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still important to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous review of their instructors and educational materials. If the school is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Natural Dam AR employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Ask if the ultrasound technician schools you are reviewing have partnerships with Natural Dam AR clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent means to obtain practical training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help students and graduates establish professional connections in the Natural Dam medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will most likely wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Arkansas healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the school they decide on will have to be within commuting distance of their Natural Dam AR residence. Those who have opted to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that prefers to sit far in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a smaller class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  college you finally choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Natural Dam AR area, verify that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family emergencies.
