Sonogram Tech Occupation Description

Higden AR ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though many work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Higden AR hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily job duties of an ultrasound tech can include:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying necessity for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly gauge the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Offered

Higden AR ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician students have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually involve around 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to complete. Another option for individuals who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to bear in mind is that most sonographer schools do have a practical training component as a portion of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which many schools sponsor through Higden AR hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to fulfill the certification or licensing prerequisites in Arkansas or whichever state you choose to work in.

Sonographer Online Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Higden ARAs previously mentioned, almost all ultrasound tech colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either held in an on-campus lab or at an approved off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can often be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Higden AR hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the rest of the training and classes may be attended online in your Higden home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that keep working while getting their degrees. Plus online colleges are often more affordable than on-campus options. Expenses for commuting and study materials can be reduced also. But similarly as with every sonography program you are looking at, check that the online program you select is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree could be the right choice for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Technician Programs

Questions to ask Higden AR ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can initiate the procedure of assessing and comparing sonogram tech schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you will access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Higden AR area. Of course location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are additional variables that you must also take into account, for example if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech school prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Colleges Accredited? Most sonogram technician colleges have received some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still crucial to confirm that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed evaluation of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Higden AR health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Inquire if the sonogram technician programs you are interested in have relationships with Higden AR hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great manner to obtain practical training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help students and graduates form professional connections in the Higden healthcare community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new field can be challenging without support. Find out if the sonographer programs you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Arkansas healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the college they pick will need to be within commuting distance of their Higden AR home. Individuals who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit way in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the ultrasound tech  college you ultimately choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you choose to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Higden AR area, check that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.
