Ultrasound Technician Occupation Summary

Gamaliel AR ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Gamaliel AR hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily work functions of a sonogram technician can include:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining need for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently assess the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Offered

Gamaliel AR ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically involve around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to complete. Another alternative for individuals who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to bear in mind is that most sonographer schools do have a clinical training component as part of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which numerous schools sponsor with Gamaliel AR hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to comply with the certification or licensing requirements in Arkansas or whichever state you decide to practice in.

Ultrasound Tech Online Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Gamaliel ARAs previously mentioned, nearly all sonogram technician colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can receive a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus laboratory or at a sponsored off-campus facility. Practical training can usually be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Gamaliel AR outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the rest of the classes and training can be attended online in your Gamaliel home. This is especially convenient for those students that continue working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online programs are many times less expensive than on campus options. Costs for study materials and commuting may be reduced as well. But just as with any ultrasound tech school you are reviewing, check that the online program you select is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school may be the ideal option for you.

Points to Ask Sonography Programs

Questions to ask Gamaliel AR ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can start the procedure of reviewing and comparing sonogram technician colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you will access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Gamaliel AR area. Of course location will be critical if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification as well. But there are other things that you must also take into consideration, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internship programs. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonographer college before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Colleges Accredited? A large number of ultrasound technician colleges have received some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed assessment of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in securing financial aid and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Gamaliel AR health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Offered? Inquire if the sonogram tech colleges you are assessing have relationships with Gamaliel AR hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great manner to receive practical experience in a clinical environment, they are also a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can assist students and graduates develop professional connections in the Gamaliel health care community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that first job in a new profession can be difficult without help. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Arkansas healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the school they pick will have to be within commuting distance of their Gamaliel AR home. Students who have opted to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit way in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the sonographer  college you ultimately select can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Gamaliel AR area, make sure that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.

    Bombay Scottish School, Mahim

The Bombay Scottish School (BSS), popularly known as Scottish, is a private, co-educational day school located at Mahim West in Mumbai, India. The institution was established in 1847 by Scottish Christian missionaries under the name Scottish Female Orphanage.

The school caters to pupils from kindergarten up to class 12 and the medium of instruction is English. The school is affiliated with the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations, New Delhi, which conducts the ICSE examinations at the close of class 10 and the ISC examinations at the close of class 12. The school has been among the top 10 schools in India for the past few decades. Most of its alumni belong to the film industry.

The institution was founded in 1847 at Byculla in Bombay, British India by a small group of Scottish missionaries as the Scottish Female Orphanage. The orphanage was set up to educate the daughters of Scottish Presbyterian soldiers and Indian Navy Seamen. The success of the Scottish Female Orphanage led to the establishment of a similar institution for boys known as the Orphanage for the Sons of Presbyterians in 1857. In 1859, the Scottish Female Orphanage and the Orphanage for the Sons of Presbyterians were merged to form The Bombay Presbyterian Male and Female Orphanage. In 1863, the name of the institution was altered to the Bombay Scottish Orphanage.[1] On 18 February 1867, the first general meeting of subscribers to the Bombay Scottish Orphanage Trust was held.[5] The institution acquired a large plot of land adjacent to the Mahim Bay. Here a boarding school was built to impart education on the model of British schools. The school building was designed by D. E. Gostling and J. Morris and sanctioned by the Government of Bombay on 15 July 1875. The construction of the school building was commenced on 8 December 1875 by Sir Philip Edmond Wodehouse, then Governor and President in Council. The construction of the Bombay Scottish Orphanage was completed on 28 February 1878 at a cost of ₹84,015. The orphanage was opened by Sir Richard Temple Bart, then Governor and President in Council on 13 April 1878. The children were shifted from Byculla to their new accommodation in the boarding school at Mahim. The orphanage relied on the public to a considerable extent for monetary funds.[1]
