Although many work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Fordyce AR hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily work tasks of a sonogram tech may include:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining necessity for supplemental testing

Sonographers must frequently gauge the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education training on a regular basis.

Another option for individuals who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to keep in mind is that most sonographer schools do have a practical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which numerous schools set up with Fordyce AR clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to comply with the licensing or certification requirements in Arkansas or whatever state you elect to work in.

So while you can earn a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either held in an on-campus laboratory or at an authorized off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can typically be fulfilled through an internship at a local Fordyce AR hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the remainder of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Fordyce home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that keep working while getting their degrees. In addition online schools are many times less expensive than on-campus options. Expenses for study materials and commuting can be lessened also. But just as with any sonographer program you are reviewing, make sure that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school could be the right option for you.

You may first want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Fordyce AR area. Certainly location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification as well. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are several questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech college before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Colleges Accredited? A large number of ultrasound technician colleges have received some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive evaluation of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Fordyce AR health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry level positions.

Are Internships Sponsored? Find out if the sonogram technician programs you are assessing have relationships with Fordyce AR hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great way to get practical training in a clinical environment, they are also a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can assist graduates and students develop professional relationships in the Fordyce healthcare community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that first job in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Arkansas healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the school they choose will have to be within commuting distance of their Fordyce AR home. Individuals who have opted to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of student that prefers to sit way in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to speak with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the ultrasound tech  school you finally choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you choose to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Fordyce AR area, check that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.
