Sonographer Job Description

Evening Shade AR ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Even though a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Evening Shade AR hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily job duties of an ultrasound technician may include:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying necessity for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely evaluate the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Sonogram Technician Degrees Offered

Evening Shade AR ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically take about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to finish. Another alternative for those who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to consider is that most ultrasound technician colleges do have a practical training element as part of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which many schools sponsor through Evening Shade AR clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to satisfy the certification or licensing prerequisites in Arkansas or whatever state you choose to work in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Classes

student attending online sonography class in Evening Shade ARAs earlier discussed, nearly all sonogram technician colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus laboratory or at an approved off-campus facility. Clinical training can typically be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Evening Shade AR hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the rest of the classes and training may be attended online in your Evening Shade home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that continue working while earning their degrees. Plus online programs are many times less expensive than traditional alternatives. Expenditures for commuting and study materials may be lessened also. But similarly as with every ultrasound tech college you are looking at, check that the online school you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes may be the ideal option for you.

Questions to Ask Sonogram Tech Schools

Questions to ask Evening Shade AR ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of assessing and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You may first want to decide whether you will attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Evening Shade AR area. Of course location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification also. But there are other factors that you should also take into consideration, for example if the programs are accredited and if they provide internships. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each sonography program prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Programs Accredited? The majority of ultrasound technician colleges have obtained some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still imperative to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed evaluation of their teachers and educational materials. If the school is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Evening Shade AR health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Ask if the ultrasound technician colleges you are reviewing have associations with Evening Shade AR hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great manner to get practical experience in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help students and graduates develop professional connections in the Evening Shade healthcare community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will undoubtedly want to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Find out if the sonographer schools you are assessing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Arkansas healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the school they pick will need to be within commuting distance of their Evening Shade AR home. Individuals who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that prefers to sit far in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the ultrasound tech  school you finally pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you choose to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Evening Shade AR area, make certain that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.
