Sonogram Tech Job Description

Donaldson AR ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Donaldson AR hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily work duties of an ultrasound technician can consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining necessity for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently assess the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Sonogram Technician Degrees Available

Donaldson AR ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician enrollees have the option to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally take around 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to complete. Another option for those who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to bear in mind is that almost all sonographer programs do have a clinical training component as part of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which numerous schools sponsor through Donaldson AR hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to comply with the certification or licensing prerequisites in Arkansas or whatever state you elect to practice in.

Clinical training can usually be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Donaldson AR outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. However the remainder of the training and classes may be attended online in your Donaldson home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that keep working while getting their degrees. In addition online programs are frequently less costly than traditional alternatives. Expenditures for commuting and study materials may be lessened also. But just as with every ultrasound tech program you are looking at, check that the online school you choose is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school may be the ideal option for you.

Questions to Ask Sonogram Tech Schools

Questions to ask Donaldson AR ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have decided on the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can start the process of evaluating and comparing sonogram tech schools. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Donaldson AR area. Clearly location will be important if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier also. But there are additional things that you should also take into account, for instance if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each sonographer school before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Schools Accredited? The majority of ultrasound tech schools have obtained some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to make sure that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous evaluation of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also help in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Donaldson AR employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry level positions.

Are Internships Sponsored? Find out if the ultrasound tech colleges you are interested in have partnerships with Donaldson AR clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great way to receive practical experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may assist students and graduates form professional connections in the Donaldson medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will undoubtedly want to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without help. Ask if the sonographer schools you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Arkansas healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the college they choose will need to be within driving distance of their Donaldson AR home. Those who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that prefers to sit way in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a smaller class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the sonographer  program you finally choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you choose to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Donaldson AR area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family emergencies.
