Ultrasound Technician Occupation Summary

Cherry Valley AR ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Cherry Valley AR hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily job functions of a sonogram technician may include:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining necessity for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly assess the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education training on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Available

Cherry Valley AR ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician students have the choice to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically involve around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to finish. Another alternative for those who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to consider is that the majority of ultrasound technician schools do have a clinical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by participating in an internship program which numerous schools organize with Cherry Valley AR hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to comply with the licensing or certification requirements in Arkansas or whichever state you elect to work in.

Ultrasound Tech Online Classes

student attending online sonography class in Cherry Valley ARAs earlier discussed, nearly all ultrasound tech colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can earn a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either held in an on-campus lab or at an approved off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can typically be satisfied through an internship at a local Cherry Valley AR hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the remainder of the classes and training can be attended online in your Cherry Valley home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that keep working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online colleges are frequently less costly than on-campus alternatives. Expenditures for commuting and study materials can be decreased also. But similarly as with any sonographer program you are considering, verify that the online school you select is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school may be the right choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Sonography Colleges

Questions to ask Cherry Valley AR ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of evaluating and comparing sonogram technician schools. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Cherry Valley AR area. Obviously location will be important if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification as well. But there are additional variables that you must also take into consideration, for example if the programs are accredited and if they provide internship programs. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each sonographer college before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Schools Accredited? A large number of sonogram technician colleges have earned some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still important to confirm that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous assessment of their instructors and educational materials. If the program is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in getting financial aid and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Cherry Valley AR health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are reviewing have partnerships with Cherry Valley AR clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific manner to get practical experience in a clinical environment, they are also a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help students and graduates form professional connections in the Cherry Valley medical community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Arkansas healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the college they pick will need to be within travelling distance of their Cherry Valley AR home. Individuals who have chosen to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit way in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with some of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the sonographer  program you ultimately select can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Cherry Valley AR area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family obligations.
