Ultrasound Tech Work Description

Cedarville AR ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Although many practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most practice in Cedarville AR clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily work functions of a sonogram tech can consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying need for supplemental testing

Sonographers must routinely evaluate the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Available

Cedarville AR ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally take about 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to finalize. Another alternative for those who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to bear in mind is that most sonographer schools do have a practical training component as part of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which numerous schools organize through Cedarville AR clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to satisfy the licensing or certification prerequisites in Arkansas or whichever state you elect to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Schools

student attending online sonography class in Cedarville ARAs earlier discussed, almost all sonogram technician colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either held in an on-campus laboratory or at a sponsored off campus medical care provider. Practical training can usually be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Cedarville AR hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the remainder of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Cedarville home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that continue working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online schools are often less expensive than on-campus alternatives. Expenditures for commuting and study materials may be reduced as well. But similarly as with every sonographer program you are reviewing, check that the online school you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree may be the ideal option for you.

Subjects to Ask Sonogram Tech Schools

Questions to ask Cedarville AR ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of assessing and comparing sonogram technician colleges. You may first want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Cedarville AR area. Clearly location will be important if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier as well. But there are other factors that you must also take into account, such as if the schools are accredited and if they provide internships. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech school before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Schools Accredited? The majority of sonogram technician schools have obtained some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still important to confirm that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed assessment of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Cedarville AR employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Offered? Find out if the sonogram technician colleges you are evaluating have relationships with Cedarville AR clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent means to get hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are additionally a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help graduates and students establish professional relationships in the Cedarville health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that first job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are assessing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Arkansas healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the school they select will need to be within driving distance of their Cedarville AR home. Students who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that prefers to sit way in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the sonographer  school you ultimately choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you decide to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Cedarville AR area, make sure that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.
