Sonogram Tech Work Summary

Casa AR ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Casa AR clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily job duties of a sonogram tech may involve:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying necessity for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely gauge the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education training on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Offered

Casa AR ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the choice to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually require about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to complete. Another option for those who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to keep in mind is that most sonographer colleges do have a clinical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which many schools sponsor through Casa AR clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to fulfill the licensing or certification requirements in Arkansas or whichever state you decide to practice in.

Online Sonographer Classes

student attending online sonography class in Casa ARAs earlier discussed, nearly all ultrasound technician schools have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can receive a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either held in an on campus lab or at an approved off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can typically be fulfilled through an internship at a local Casa AR outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the balance of the training and classes may be attended online in your Casa home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that keep working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online schools are frequently less expensive than on-campus alternatives. Expenditures for study materials and commuting may be reduced also. But just as with any ultrasound tech program you are looking at, make sure that the online program you choose is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree could be the ideal option for you.

Topics to Ask Sonogram Tech Programs

Questions to ask Casa AR ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of reviewing and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you will access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Casa AR area. Clearly location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification as well. But there are other things that you must also take into consideration, for example if the programs are accredited and if they offer internship programs. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each sonography program prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Schools Accredited? A large number of sonogram technician schools have acquired some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still imperative to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous assessment of their instructors and educational materials. If the school is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial aid and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Casa AR health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry level jobs.

Are Internships Sponsored? Inquire if the sonogram technician schools you are reviewing have associations with Casa AR hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific manner to get practical experience in a clinical setting, they are additionally a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help graduates and students establish professional connections in the Casa healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will undoubtedly wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that first job in a new field can be difficult without help. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Arkansas healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the college they choose will need to be within travelling distance of their Casa AR residence. Those who have decided to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that prefers to sit far in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  school you finally pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Casa AR area, check that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.
