Sonogram Tech Work Summary

Bryant AR ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although many work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority practice in Bryant AR hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily job tasks of a sonogram technician may include:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining necessity for further testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly assess the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Offered

Bryant AR ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician students have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally require around 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to complete. Another alternative for individuals who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to consider is that the majority of ultrasound technician colleges do have a practical training component as part of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which many colleges set up with Bryant AR hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to satisfy the certification or licensing requirements in Arkansas or whatever state you choose to work in.

Online Sonographer Classes

student attending online sonography class in Bryant ARAs previously mentioned, almost all sonogram tech schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can earn a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either held in an on campus lab or at an approved off campus medical care provider. Practical training can usually be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Bryant AR hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the remainder of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Bryant home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that continue working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online schools are often less costly than on-campus alternatives. Expenditures for study materials and commuting can be reduced also. But just as with every sonographer college you are considering, confirm that the online school you choose is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree could be the ideal choice for you.

Questions to Ask Sonogram Tech Programs

Questions to ask Bryant AR ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can begin the procedure of assessing and comparing sonogram technician colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Bryant AR area. Obviously location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier as well. But there are other factors that you should also take into consideration, for instance if the schools are accredited and if they offer internships. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonographer program before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Schools Accredited? Most sonogram technician colleges have obtained some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still important to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive assessment of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Bryant AR health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry level openings.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Inquire if the sonogram technician colleges you are reviewing have relationships with Bryant AR hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific way to obtain practical training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help graduates and students form professional relationships in the Bryant medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Find out if the sonographer schools you are assessing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Arkansas healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the college they select will have to be within driving distance of their Bryant AR home. Students who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that prefers to sit way in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the ultrasound tech  college you ultimately pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Bryant AR area, make certain that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family obligations.
