Sonogram Tech Job Summary

Brickeys AR ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While many practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Brickeys AR clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily job tasks of a sonogram tech can consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining necessity for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently gauge the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degrees Available

Brickeys AR ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician enrollees have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically involve around 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to complete. Another alternative for individuals who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to bear in mind is that most sonographer programs do have a clinical training element as part of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which numerous schools set up through Brickeys AR hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to comply with the licensing or certification requirements in Arkansas or whichever state you elect to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Classes

student attending online sonography class in Brickeys ARAs previously mentioned, virtually all sonogram tech colleges have a practical component to their programs. So although you can receive a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either carried out in an on campus laboratory or at an authorized off campus medical care provider. Practical training can typically be fulfilled through an internship at a local Brickeys AR hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the remainder of the classes and training may be attended online in your Brickeys home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that continue working while earning their degrees. Plus online schools are often less costly than traditional alternatives. Expenditures for study materials and commuting can be reduced as well. But similarly as with any ultrasound tech program you are looking at, confirm that the online program you select is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree may be the ideal choice for you.

What to Ask Ultrasound Technician Colleges

Questions to ask Brickeys AR ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of assessing and comparing sonogram technician schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you will attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Brickeys AR area. Naturally location will be critical if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier as well. But there are additional factors that you should also take into consideration, for instance if the colleges are accredited and if they offer internship programs. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech school before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Programs Accredited? A large number of sonogram technician schools have earned some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still important to make sure that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive evaluation of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Brickeys AR employers will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry-level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Inquire if the ultrasound tech programs you are interested in have associations with Brickeys AR clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great means to obtain hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can assist students and graduates establish professional relationships in the Brickeys healthcare community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will most likely wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that first job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Ask if the sonographer schools you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Arkansas healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the school they select will have to be within travelling distance of their Brickeys AR residence. Students who have opted to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit far in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  college you finally select can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you choose to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Brickeys AR area, check that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.
