Sonographer Job Description

Alma AR ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Alma AR hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily job duties of a sonogram tech may consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining need for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely evaluate the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Offered

Alma AR ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually require around 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finish. Another option for those who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to bear in mind is that almost all sonographer schools do have a clinical training component as part of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which many schools sponsor with Alma AR hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to satisfy the certification or licensing prerequisites in Arkansas or whichever state you decide to practice in.

Ultrasound Tech Online Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Alma ARAs aforementioned, almost all ultrasound tech schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either held in an on-campus lab or at an authorized off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can typically be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Alma AR outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. However the rest of the training and classes may be attended online in your Alma home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that keep working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online colleges are often less expensive than on-campus alternatives. Expenses for commuting and study materials can be reduced also. But just as with every ultrasound tech program you are looking at, make sure that the online school you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school may be the ideal option for you.

Subjects to Ask Sonogram Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Alma AR ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have decided on the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can start the procedure of evaluating and comparing sonogram tech schools. You may first want to decide whether you will access classes online or commute to a college campus in the Alma AR area. Clearly location will be important if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are other things that you should also take into account, such as if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internships. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech program before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Colleges Accredited? Most ultrasound technician schools have acquired some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to confirm that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed assessment of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Alma AR employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Sponsored? Inquire if the sonogram technician colleges you are evaluating have relationships with Alma AR hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent manner to obtain practical training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help students and graduates establish professional connections in the Alma medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that first job in a new field can be challenging without help. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are considering have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Arkansas healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the college they select will have to be within commuting distance of their Alma AR residence. Students who have decided to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that prefers to sit way in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with some of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the sonographer  college you finally pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you choose to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Alma AR area, confirm that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.
