Ultrasound Technician Work Summary

Sun City AZ ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Although many work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Sun City AZ clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily work functions of an ultrasound technician can involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining necessity for supplemental testing

Sonographers must regularly gauge the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Offered

Sun City AZ ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician students have the choice to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally involve around 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finish. Another alternative for individuals who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to bear in mind is that most sonographer programs do have a practical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which numerous colleges sponsor through Sun City AZ clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to satisfy the licensing or certification requirements in Arizona or whatever state you choose to work in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Sun City AZAs aforementioned, nearly all ultrasound tech colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus lab or at an authorized off campus facility. Clinical training can typically be fulfilled through an internship at a local Sun City AZ hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the rest of the classes and training may be attended online in your Sun City home. This is especially convenient for those students that continue working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online schools are many times less expensive than traditional options. Expenses for commuting and study materials can be decreased also. But just as with any ultrasound tech college you are considering, verify that the online school you choose is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree could be the ideal option for you.

Questions to Ask Sonogram Tech Programs

Questions to ask Sun City AZ ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can start the process of evaluating and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You may first want to decide whether you will access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Sun City AZ area. Naturally location will be critical if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualification as well. But there are other variables that you should also take into account, for instance if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internships. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each sonography college prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Colleges Accredited? Most ultrasound technician schools have acquired some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive assessment of their instructors and educational materials. If the program is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Sun City AZ employers will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are evaluating have relationships with Sun City AZ hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great manner to receive hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may assist students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Sun City medical community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will probably want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that first job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Ask if the sonographer schools you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Arizona healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the school they decide on will need to be within travelling distance of their Sun City AZ residence. Students who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit far in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to speak with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  program you finally pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you choose to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Sun City AZ area, verify that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family obligations.

    Sun City, Arizona

Sun City is a census-designated place and unincorporated community in Maricopa County, Arizona, United States, that is within the Phoenix metropolitan area. The population was 37,499 according to the 2010 census. Its adjoining sister city is Sun City West. Both cities are retirement communities popular with snowbirds.

Sun City was opened January 1, 1960, with five home models, a shopping center, a recreation center, and a golf course. The opening weekend drew 100,000 people, ten times more than expected, and resulted in a Time magazine cover story.[3] The future retirement community was built on the site of the former ghost town of Marinette.[4] Developer DelĀ E. Webb expanded Sun City over the years, and his company went on to build other retirement communities in the Sun Belt. Sun City West was built in the late 1970s, Sun City Grand in the late 1990s, Sun City Anthem in 1999, and Sun City Festival in July 2006.[5]

The community is well known to law students, as it is featured in the case Spur Industries v. Del E. Webb Development Co., 494 P.2d 700 (Ariz. 1972), commonly used in first-year property law courses to illustrate nuisance law.
