Sonogram Tech Job Summary

Pine AZ ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though many practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Pine AZ hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily job tasks of an ultrasound technician can involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining necessity for additional testing

Sonographers must frequently gauge the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Offered

Pine AZ ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically involve about 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to complete. Another option for individuals who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to consider is that the majority of ultrasound technician programs do have a practical training element as part of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which numerous colleges organize with Pine AZ clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to comply with the certification or licensing requirements in Arizona or whichever state you decide to practice in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Pine AZAs earlier discussed, almost all sonogram tech colleges have a practical component to their programs. So although you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either conducted in an on campus laboratory or at an authorized off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can usually be fulfilled through an internship at a local Pine AZ outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the remainder of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Pine home. This is especially convenient for those students that keep working while earning their degrees. In addition online programs are frequently less expensive than traditional options. Expenditures for commuting and study materials may be lessened as well. But similarly as with every sonography program you are looking at, make sure that the online school you select is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school may be the right option for you.

Subjects to Ask Ultrasound Tech Schools

Questions to ask Pine AZ ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can begin the procedure of reviewing and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Pine AZ area. Certainly location will be significant if you select the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification also. But there are other variables that you should also take into account, such as if the programs are accredited and if they provide internship programs. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each sonography college prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Colleges Accredited? The majority of sonogram technician schools have obtained some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still important to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous examination of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Pine AZ employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry level openings.

Are Internships Sponsored? Inquire if the sonogram tech colleges you are interested in have associations with Pine AZ clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a great means to receive practical experience in a clinical environment, they are also a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can assist graduates and students develop professional connections in the Pine medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that first job in a new field can be challenging without support. Ask if the sonographer programs you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Arizona healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the college they choose will need to be within driving distance of their Pine AZ home. Individuals who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that prefers to sit far in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with several of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  program you finally pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you decide to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Pine AZ area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.
