Ultrasound Technician Job Description

Keams Canyon AZ ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although many practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Keams Canyon AZ clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily job duties of a sonogram technician may consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying necessity for further testing

Sonographers must frequently assess the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Offered

Keams Canyon AZ ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician students have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually take about 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to finish. Another alternative for individuals who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to keep in mind is that most sonographer programs do have a practical training element as a portion of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by participating in an internship program which many colleges set up with Keams Canyon AZ hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to fulfill the licensing or certification requirements in Arizona or whichever state you elect to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Keams Canyon AZAs previously mentioned, almost all sonogram tech colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can receive a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either conducted in an on campus lab or at a sponsored off campus facility. Practical training can usually be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Keams Canyon AZ hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the balance of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Keams Canyon home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that keep working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online colleges are often more affordable than on campus options. Expenses for commuting and study materials may be reduced also. But just as with any ultrasound tech program you are looking at, make sure that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the right option for you.

Subjects to Ask Sonogram Tech Schools

Questions to ask Keams Canyon AZ ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of evaluating and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a college campus in the Keams Canyon AZ area. Of course location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier as well. But there are additional things that you should also take into account, such as if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internship programs. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each sonography program before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Colleges Accredited? Most sonogram tech colleges have acquired some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still important to confirm that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive evaluation of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Keams Canyon AZ employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Offered? Ask if the sonogram tech colleges you are evaluating have associations with Keams Canyon AZ clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific way to obtain practical experience in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help students and graduates develop professional connections in the Keams Canyon healthcare community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will undoubtedly wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Find out if the sonographer schools you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Arizona healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the school they pick will have to be within travelling distance of their Keams Canyon AZ residence. Individuals who have opted to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that likes to sit far in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the sonographer  program you ultimately pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Keams Canyon AZ area, make sure that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family obligations.

    Keams Canyon, Arizona

Pongsikya is a narrow box canyon named after a plant of edible greens that survived along the seasonal stream that drains from Antelope Mesa and flows through the three mile long canyon. Here William Keam, and then his cousin Thomas Keam,[3] operated a trading post during the last quarter of the nineteenth century. They served the Navajo Indians and opened the door to commercial trade for the Hopi Indians. The nearest trading post was some fifty miles away and Keam’s trading post was 13 miles east of the Hopi Indian’s settlements on First Mesa. With the opportunity for full year round trade nearby, the regional Indians quickly identified the canyon with the traders and the name Keams Canyon took hold.[4]
