Petersburg AK sonographer performing ultrasoundOnce you have decided to obtain an ultrasound technician degree near Petersburg AK, the next step is to begin the process of selecting a college. To begin with, you must find the right program that will provide the necessary training to become a skilled professional. And given that some states do require that sonographers be either licensed or certified, depending on where you will practice you may also need preparation to pass a certification or licensing exam. So it’s extremely important that you research each school in order to evaluate and compare your alternatives. But just where does one start? Many prospective students will begin by looking for schools that are within travelling distance of their homes and then by comparing tuition. Certainly location and cost need to be taken into account when arriving at a decision, but there are other significant factors as well. For example, if the ultrasound technician schools have earned accreditation or if they provide internships. These and additional qualifications will be covered more in detail later in this post. But first, let’s go over what an ultrasound tech does and the degrees and online training programs that are available.

Ultrasound Technician Work Description

Petersburg AK ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While many practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most practice in Petersburg AK clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily job functions of an ultrasound technician may include:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining need for further testing

Sonographers must regularly assess the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Available

Petersburg AK ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally take about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to finish. Another option for those who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to consider is that almost all ultrasound technician colleges do have a clinical training element as part of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which many schools set up with Petersburg AK hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to satisfy the certification or licensing prerequisites in Alaska or whatever state you elect to practice in.

Sonogram Tech Online Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Petersburg AKAs previously mentioned, virtually all ultrasound technician schools have a practical component to their programs. So while you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either held in an on campus lab or at a sponsored off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can usually be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Petersburg AK hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the rest of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Petersburg home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that keep working while earning their degrees. Plus online programs are frequently more affordable than on-campus options. Costs for commuting and study materials may be reduced also. But similarly as with every sonography school you are reviewing, make sure that the online program you choose is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school may be the ideal choice for you.

Topics to Ask Ultrasound Tech Programs

Questions to ask Petersburg AK ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the procedure of assessing and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Petersburg AK area. Naturally location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are other things that you should also take into consideration, for example if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internships. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each sonography college before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Colleges Accredited? Most sonogram tech colleges have obtained some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still important to verify that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous review of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Petersburg AK health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry level openings.

Are Internships Provided? Inquire if the ultrasound technician programs you are evaluating have relationships with Petersburg AK hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great manner to get practical experience in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help graduates and students develop professional relationships in the Petersburg health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will most likely wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that first job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Ask if the sonographer programs you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Alaska healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the school they choose will need to be within commuting distance of their Petersburg AK residence. Individuals who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit far in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with some of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  school you ultimately select can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Petersburg AK area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family emergencies.

    Petersburg, Alaska

Petersburg (Tlingit: Gantiyaakw SĂ©edi "Steamboat Channel") is a census-designated place (CDP) in Petersburg Borough, Alaska, United States. The population was 2,948 at the 2010 census, down from 3,224 in 2000.

The borough encompasses Petersburg and Kupreanof, plus mostly uninhabited areas stretching to the Canadian–American border and the southern boundary of the City and Borough of Juneau.[1][2] While the city of Petersburg ceased to exist as a separate administrative entity (the borough assembly created a service area to assume operation of the former city's services), the tiny city of Kupreanof remains separate within the borough.[3]

Tlingits from Kupreanof Island had long used a summer fish camp at the north end of Mitkof Island. Earlier cultures of indigenous people also used the island: remnants of fish traps and some petroglyphs have been carbon-dated back some 1,000 years.
