Sonogram Tech Occupation Description

King Cove AK ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Although a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in King Cove AK hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily job duties of a sonogram tech can include:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying necessity for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely gauge the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education training on a regular basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Available

King Cove AK ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally take about 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to finish. Another option for individuals who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to bear in mind is that most sonographer programs do have a clinical training component as a portion of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by participating in an internship program which numerous schools sponsor through King Cove AK clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to comply with the licensing or certification requirements in Alaska or whichever state you decide to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Degrees

student attending online sonography class in King Cove AKAs aforementioned, virtually all sonogram technician schools have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either carried out in an on campus laboratory or at an approved off campus facility. Clinical training can typically be fulfilled through an internship at a local King Cove AK outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the balance of the classes and training can be attended online in your King Cove home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that keep working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online programs are many times more affordable than on campus alternatives. Expenditures for study materials and commuting can be decreased also. But similarly as with any sonography college you are reviewing, confirm that the online school you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal option for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Tech Programs

Questions to ask King Cove AK ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can start the process of assessing and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a college campus in the King Cove AK area. Certainly location will be important if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification as well. But there are additional factors that you must also take into account, such as if the schools are accredited and if they provide internship programs. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech program prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Schools Accredited? Most ultrasound tech colleges have obtained some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still crucial to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed evaluation of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in securing financial aid and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many King Cove AK health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry-level openings.

Are Internships Provided? Find out if the sonogram tech colleges you are reviewing have associations with King Cove AK hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific manner to get practical training in a clinical setting, they are also a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help students and graduates establish professional connections in the King Cove healthcare community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will probably want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Find out if the sonographer programs you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Alaska healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the school they decide on will have to be within driving distance of their King Cove AK home. Those who have opted to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit way in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with some of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the sonographer  college you finally pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you opt to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the King Cove AK area, make certain that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.
