Wedowee AL ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Even though many practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Wedowee AL clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily work duties of a sonogram technician can consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying need for additional testing

Sonographers must frequently assess the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Available

Wedowee AL ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally take around 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to finish. Another alternative for individuals who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to keep in mind is that most sonographer schools do have a practical training component as part of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which many colleges sponsor with Wedowee AL hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to fulfill the licensing or certification prerequisites in Alabama or whatever state you choose to practice in.

Ultrasound Tech Online Classes

student attending online sonography class in Wedowee ALAs aforementioned, almost all sonogram tech schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either conducted in an on campus laboratory or at an authorized off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can usually be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Wedowee AL hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the remainder of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Wedowee home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that keep working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online colleges are often more affordable than on-campus options. Costs for commuting and study materials may be lessened also. But similarly as with any sonographer program you are looking at, confirm that the online program you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree may be the right choice for you.

Points to Ask Sonography Colleges

Questions to ask Wedowee AL ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can initiate the process of assessing and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You may first want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Wedowee AL area. Clearly location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification also. But there are other factors that you should also take into consideration, for example if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each sonography school prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Schools Accredited? A large number of sonogram technician schools have acquired some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still crucial to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed examination of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Wedowee AL health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry-level positions.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are evaluating have partnerships with Wedowee AL clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent manner to obtain hands on training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help graduates and students form professional connections in the Wedowee health care community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that first job in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Alabama healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the school they decide on will have to be within commuting distance of their Wedowee AL home. Those who have decided to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit way in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the ultrasound tech  college you finally choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you choose to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Wedowee AL area, make certain that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.

    Wedowee, Alabama

Wedowee is a town in Randolph County, Alabama, United States. At the 2010 census the population was 823, up from 818 in 2000. The small town is the county seat of Randolph County.[3] It was initially incorporated in 1836, but its charter lapsed by the late 19th century. It was reincorporated in 1901.[4]

Following Indian Removal of the Creek in the 1830s to Indian Territory west of the Mississippi River by the US government, this area was settled by European Americans. The town of Wedowee was designated as the county seat of Randolph County in 1835. The county was developed for the cultivation of cotton as a commodity crop, with labor primarily done by enslaved African Americans, many of whom had been sold to the Deep South from the Upper South in the domestic slave trade.

Since the late 20th century, Lake Wedowee was created by the impoundment of the Tallapoosa River. This has enhanced the tourist drawing power of the town. Also known as the R. L. Harris Reservoir, the lake draws thousands of visitors to Wedowee every year. [5]
