Sonographer Job Summary

Union Grove AL ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. While a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Union Grove AL clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily work duties of a sonogram technician may consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining necessity for further testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently gauge the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Available

Union Grove AL ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the option to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally involve around 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to complete. Another option for individuals who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to bear in mind is that most sonographer colleges do have a practical training component as part of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which many colleges sponsor with Union Grove AL clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to satisfy the certification or licensing requirements in Alabama or whatever state you elect to practice in.

Online Sonogram Tech Programs

student attending online sonography class in Union Grove ALAs earlier discussed, virtually all sonogram technician colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either held in an on-campus lab or at an approved off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can usually be satisfied through an internship at a local Union Grove AL outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the remainder of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Union Grove home. This is especially beneficial for those students that keep working while getting their degrees. Plus online programs are often less expensive than on-campus alternatives. Expenditures for study materials and commuting may be decreased also. But similarly as with every ultrasound tech school you are considering, confirm that the online school you select is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school may be the ideal option for you.

Subjects to Ask Ultrasound Tech Schools

Questions to ask Union Grove AL ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can initiate the process of evaluating and comparing sonogram tech schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a college campus in the Union Grove AL area. Naturally location will be critical if you select the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualification also. But there are other variables that you must also take into account, for instance if the colleges are accredited and if they offer internship programs. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are a few questions that you need ask each sonographer program before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Colleges Accredited? The majority of sonogram tech colleges have received some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still important to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous assessment of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also help in securing financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Union Grove AL employers will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Provided? Inquire if the sonogram technician colleges you are interested in have relationships with Union Grove AL hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great means to get practical training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can assist graduates and students form professional connections in the Union Grove healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will most likely wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without support. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Alabama healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the school they decide on will need to be within travelling distance of their Union Grove AL home. Individuals who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit way in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  college you finally select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you decide to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Union Grove AL area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.
