Sonographer Occupation Description

Saginaw AL ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Saginaw AL clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily job functions of a sonogram technician can involve:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining need for further testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely evaluate the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Offered

Saginaw AL ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally involve around 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to complete. Another alternative for those who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to keep in mind is that the majority of sonographer colleges do have a practical training component as part of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by entering into an internship program which numerous schools set up through Saginaw AL hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to satisfy the licensing or certification prerequisites in Alabama or whatever state you elect to practice in.

Sonographer Online Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Saginaw ALAs earlier discussed, nearly all ultrasound technician colleges have a practical component to their programs. So while you can earn a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either carried out in an on campus laboratory or at an approved off-campus facility. Practical training can often be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Saginaw AL outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the remainder of the classes and training may be attended online in your Saginaw home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that continue working while earning their degrees. In addition online schools are often less expensive than on campus alternatives. Costs for study materials and commuting can be lessened as well. But just as with every sonographer college you are looking at, confirm that the online program you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree could be the right choice for you.

What to Ask Sonogram Tech Schools

Questions to ask Saginaw AL ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the procedure of reviewing and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You may first want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Saginaw AL area. Of course location will be important if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are other factors that you should also take into account, such as if the programs are accredited and if they provide internships. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are a few questions that you need ask each sonography school prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Programs Accredited? The majority of ultrasound technician schools have earned some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still imperative to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous review of their teachers and course materials. If the school is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Saginaw AL employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level positions.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Ask if the sonogram tech schools you are evaluating have relationships with Saginaw AL hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great way to receive hands on training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help graduates and students establish professional relationships in the Saginaw medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will most likely wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that first job in a new field can be challenging without assistance. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are considering have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Alabama healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the school they select will have to be within driving distance of their Saginaw AL home. Students who have opted to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that prefers to sit far in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with some of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  college you finally choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Saginaw AL area, confirm that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family obligations.
