Pine Level AL sonographer performing ultrasoundOnce you have decided to obtain an ultrasound technician degree near Pine Level AL, it’s time to start the process of picking a school. First, you must find the right program that will provide the necessary training to become a skilled professional. And given that some states do require that ultrasound techs be either licensed or certified, depending on your residence you may also need to be prepared to pass a licensing or certification exam. So it’s extremely important that you investigate each college so that you can evaluate and compare your choices. But just where does one begin? A number of prospective students will start by searching for colleges that are within driving distance of their homes and then by comparing tuition. Of course cost and location need to be considered when arriving at a decision, but there are additional critical factors as well. Such as, if the ultrasound technician schools are accredited or if they offer internship programs. These and other qualifiers will be discussed more in depth later in this article. But first, let’s go over what a sonogram tech does and the credentials and online training options that are offered.

Ultrasound Tech Work Description

Pine Level AL ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most practice in Pine Level AL hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily work functions of a sonogram tech may consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining necessity for further testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly assess the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Available

Pine Level AL ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician students have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally take about 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to finalize. Another option for those who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to consider is that almost all sonographer colleges do have a clinical training element as a portion of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which numerous schools set up through Pine Level AL hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to satisfy the certification or licensing prerequisites in Alabama or whichever state you decide to practice in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Schools

student attending online sonography class in Pine Level ALAs earlier discussed, virtually all ultrasound technician schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can earn a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus laboratory or at a sponsored off-campus facility. Clinical training can typically be fulfilled through an internship at a local Pine Level AL outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the remainder of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Pine Level home. This is especially beneficial for those students that continue working while earning their degrees. Plus online colleges are often less expensive than on-campus alternatives. Expenditures for study materials and commuting may be reduced also. But just as with any sonography school you are considering, confirm that the online program you choose is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree could be the ideal option for you.

What to Ask Ultrasound Tech Programs

Questions to ask Pine Level AL ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of reviewing and comparing sonogram technician schools. You may first want to decide whether you will access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Pine Level AL area. Clearly location will be significant if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier as well. But there are other factors that you must also take into consideration, for example if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internships. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech college before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Programs Accredited? A large number of sonogram technician schools have earned some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still important to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed evaluation of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial aid and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Pine Level AL health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Offered? Inquire if the sonogram technician programs you are assessing have partnerships with Pine Level AL clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great way to obtain practical training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help graduates and students establish professional relationships in the Pine Level health care community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will most likely wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that first job in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Find out if the sonographer schools you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Alabama healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the college they decide on will need to be within driving distance of their Pine Level AL residence. Those who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit far in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with a few of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  school you ultimately choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you choose to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Pine Level AL area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.
