Ultrasound Tech Occupation Summary

Pinckard AL ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Pinckard AL hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily job tasks of an ultrasound tech can include:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying need for further testing

Sonographers must frequently evaluate the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Available

Pinckard AL ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician enrollees have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally involve about 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finalize. Another option for individuals who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to consider is that the majority of ultrasound technician colleges do have a clinical training element as part of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by participating in an internship program which many schools sponsor with Pinckard AL clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to comply with the licensing or certification requirements in Alabama or whatever state you elect to practice in.

Sonographer Online Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Pinckard ALAs earlier discussed, virtually all ultrasound tech colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus lab or at an authorized off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can typically be fulfilled through an internship at a local Pinckard AL outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. However the remainder of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Pinckard home. This is especially convenient for those students that keep working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online programs are often less costly than on-campus alternatives. Expenditures for commuting and study materials may be reduced also. But just as with any sonographer school you are considering, check that the online program you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes could be the right option for you.

Questions to Ask Sonography Colleges

Questions to ask Pinckard AL ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the procedure of assessing and comparing sonogram tech schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you will access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Pinckard AL area. Clearly location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification also. But there are additional factors that you should also take into consideration, such as if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internship programs. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each sonography program prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Schools Accredited? Most sonogram technician schools have acquired some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still crucial to make sure that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous evaluation of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also help in getting financial aid and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Pinckard AL health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level jobs.

Are Internships Offered? Find out if the ultrasound technician colleges you are reviewing have partnerships with Pinckard AL clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a great manner to get practical experience in a clinical environment, they are also a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can assist students and graduates develop professional connections in the Pinckard health care community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that first job in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Alabama healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the college they pick will need to be within commuting distance of their Pinckard AL residence. Individuals who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that prefers to sit way in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a small class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with some of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program also.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the sonographer  school you finally pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you choose to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Pinckard AL area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.
