Ultrasound Technician Work Description

Moulton AL ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Even though a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority practice in Moulton AL hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily work tasks of an ultrasound technician may involve:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying necessity for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently gauge the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education training on a regular basis.

An Associate Degree will normally involve about 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to finish. Another option for individuals who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to consider is that almost all ultrasound technician colleges do have a practical training component as part of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which numerous schools sponsor through Moulton AL hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to satisfy the certification or licensing prerequisites in Alabama or whatever state you choose to work in.

Ultrasound Tech Online Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Moulton ALAs previously mentioned, nearly all ultrasound tech schools have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either held in an on-campus laboratory or at an approved off-campus facility. Clinical training can typically be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Moulton AL hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the rest of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Moulton home. This is especially convenient for those students that keep working while getting their degrees. In addition online colleges are often less expensive than on-campus options. Expenditures for commuting and study materials may be lessened also. But similarly as with any sonography school you are considering, verify that the online program you choose is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes may be the right option for you.

Topics to Ask Ultrasound Technician Schools

Questions to ask Moulton AL ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of assessing and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you will attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Moulton AL area. Certainly location will be important if you select the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification also. But there are other variables that you must also take into account, for example if the programs are accredited and if they offer internship programs. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonographer college before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Schools Accredited? The majority of ultrasound tech schools have acquired some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to verify that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive examination of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial aid and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Moulton AL health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level openings.

Are Internships Provided? Find out if the sonogram technician schools you are evaluating have relationships with Moulton AL hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific means to receive practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they may assist students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Moulton healthcare community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Find out if the sonographer programs you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Alabama healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the school they choose will have to be within commuting distance of their Moulton AL residence. Individuals who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit way in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a small class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the ultrasound tech  program you finally pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you decide to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Moulton AL area, check that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.

    Moulton, Alabama

Moulton is a city in Lawrence County, Alabama, United States and is included in the Decatur Metropolitan Area, as well as the Huntsville-Decatur Combined Statistical Area. Although it incorporated in 1819,[4] along with its rival of Courtland, to compete for the honor of county seat, it did not first appear on the U.S. Census rolls until 1900. As of the 2010 census, the population of the city is 3,471, its record high. The city has been the county seat of Lawrence County since 1820. It has been the largest community in the county since the 1920 U.S. Census.[5]

By the time Alabama became a state in 1819, an inn had been erected at the site of what is now Moulton to serve migrants along the various early paths that passed through the area. Shortly after Alabama achieved statehood, both Moulton and Courtland (to the north) incorporated and competed for the county seat of Lawrence County. Governor Thomas Bibb awarded the seat to Moulton as the most centrally located of the two within the county.[6] The city is named for Lieutenant Michael Moulton, a soldier killed while fighting under General Andrew Jackson at the Battle of Horseshoe Bend in 1814.[4]

Moulton is located at 34°28′56″N 87°17′8″W / 34.48222°N 87.28556°W / 34.48222; -87.28556 (34.482307, -87.285621).[7] The city is concentrated along Alabama State Route 33 southwest of Decatur. Alabama State Route 24 passes through the northern part of the city, and Alabama State Route 157 passes through its eastern section. The William B. Bankhead National Forest lies to the southwest of Moulton.
