Ultrasound Tech Job Description

Moody AL ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Moody AL hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily work duties of an ultrasound technician may consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying need for supplemental testing

Sonographers must routinely assess the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Offered

Moody AL ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician students have the option to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually require about 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finalize. Another option for individuals who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to keep in mind is that most ultrasound technician colleges do have a practical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which numerous schools organize through Moody AL hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to satisfy the licensing or certification requirements in Alabama or whatever state you elect to work in.

Online Sonographer Classes

student attending online sonography class in Moody ALAs aforementioned, virtually all ultrasound technician colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either carried out in an on campus lab or at a sponsored off campus medical care provider. Practical training can often be fulfilled through an internship at a local Moody AL hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the balance of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Moody home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that continue working while getting their degrees. Plus online schools are many times more affordable than on-campus alternatives. Costs for commuting and study materials can be lessened as well. But just as with any sonography school you are considering, confirm that the online school you choose is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes may be the ideal option for you.

What to Ask Sonography Colleges

Questions to ask Moody AL ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can initiate the process of assessing and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You will first probably want to decide whether you will attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Moody AL area. Naturally location will be important if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification also. But there are other variables that you should also take into consideration, for example if the programs are accredited and if they offer internship programs. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each sonographer college prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Programs Accredited? Most sonogram technician schools have received some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still important to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed examination of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Moody AL health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Sponsored? Inquire if the sonogram technician programs you are evaluating have partnerships with Moody AL clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent way to obtain practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help graduates and students establish professional connections in the Moody health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will undoubtedly want to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Ask if the sonographer programs you are assessing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Alabama healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the college they choose will need to be within commuting distance of their Moody AL home. Individuals who have opted to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that prefers to sit way in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  college you finally pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you decide to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Moody AL area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family emergencies.
