Ultrasound Tech Work Description

Lexington AL ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Lexington AL hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily job tasks of an ultrasound technician may consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining need for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly gauge the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Available

Lexington AL ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the choice to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally require around 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to complete. Another alternative for individuals who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to keep in mind is that most ultrasound technician programs do have a practical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by participating in an internship program which numerous schools set up with Lexington AL hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to fulfill the licensing or certification requirements in Alabama or whichever state you elect to practice in.

Online Sonogram Tech Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Lexington ALAs earlier discussed, virtually all sonogram tech schools have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can receive a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either held in an on-campus lab or at an authorized off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can often be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Lexington AL hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the rest of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Lexington home. This is particularly convenient for those students that keep working while earning their degrees. Plus online colleges are often less expensive than traditional alternatives. Expenditures for commuting and study materials may be decreased also. But just as with every sonographer college you are considering, confirm that the online school you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school may be the ideal choice for you.

Topics to Ask Ultrasound Technician Colleges

Questions to ask Lexington AL ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of reviewing and comparing sonogram technician colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you will attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Lexington AL area. Of course location will be important if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification also. But there are additional things that you should also take into account, such as if the programs are accredited and if they offer internship programs. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech program prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Colleges Accredited? The majority of sonogram tech colleges have earned some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still crucial to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive assessment of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Lexington AL health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Find out if the sonogram tech schools you are assessing have partnerships with Lexington AL clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific way to obtain practical training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can assist students and graduates establish professional relationships in the Lexington health care community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Alabama healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the school they choose will have to be within travelling distance of their Lexington AL home. Students who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit way in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the ultrasound tech  program you ultimately pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you choose to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Lexington AL area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family obligations.
