Sonographer Job Description

Emelle AL ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most practice in Emelle AL hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily work functions of an ultrasound technician can include:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying necessity for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely gauge the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Available

Emelle AL ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally involve around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finish. Another option for those who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to consider is that the majority of sonographer programs do have a practical training component as part of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which many colleges organize with Emelle AL clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to satisfy the certification or licensing prerequisites in Alabama or whichever state you decide to work in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Emelle ALAs aforementioned, nearly all sonogram technician colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can earn a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either held in an on campus laboratory or at an authorized off campus medical care provider. Practical training can often be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Emelle AL outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the remainder of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Emelle home. This is particularly convenient for those students that continue working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online schools are frequently less expensive than on campus options. Expenditures for commuting and study materials can be reduced also. But similarly as with every sonography college you are looking at, make sure that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school could be the right choice for you.

Topics to Ask Ultrasound Technician Colleges

Questions to ask Emelle AL ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can begin the procedure of evaluating and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You may first want to decide whether you will access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Emelle AL area. Of course location will be significant if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification also. But there are additional variables that you should also take into account, for example if the schools are accredited and if they offer internship programs. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each sonography school prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Programs Accredited? The majority of sonogram technician schools have earned some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still imperative to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed assessment of their instructors and educational materials. If the program is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Emelle AL employers will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Provided? Inquire if the sonogram technician programs you are interested in have partnerships with Emelle AL clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great manner to obtain practical training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Emelle medical community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that first job in a new field can be challenging without help. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Alabama healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the college they select will need to be within travelling distance of their Emelle AL residence. Individuals who have chosen to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that likes to sit way in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the sonographer  program you finally select can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you choose to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Emelle AL area, make certain that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.
