Elkmont AL sonographer performing ultrasoundNow that you have decided to pursue an ultrasound technician degree near Elkmont AL, the next step is to begin the process of picking a college. First, you must find the right program that will furnish the appropriate training to become a skilled professional. And since a number of states do require that sonographers be either certified or licensed, depending on your residence you may also need preparation to pass a certification or licensing examination. So it’s extremely important that you investigate each college so that you can evaluate and compare your options. But just where does one begin? A number of prospective students will begin by looking for colleges that are within commuting distance of their homes and then by comparing tuition. Certainly cost and location need to be considered when arriving at a decision, but there are additional critical factors as well. Such as, if the ultrasound technician schools have earned accreditation or if they offer internships. These and other qualifications will be covered more in depth later in this post. But to start with, let’s review what an ultrasound tech does and the credentials and online education programs that are available.

Sonogram Tech Work Summary

Elkmont AL ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Elkmont AL clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily job tasks of a sonogram tech may include:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining need for supplemental testing

Sonographers must routinely assess the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education training on a regular basis.

Sonogram Technician Degrees Available

Elkmont AL ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician enrollees have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally take around 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to finalize. Another option for individuals who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to consider is that most ultrasound technician schools do have a practical training component as part of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which many colleges sponsor with Elkmont AL clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to fulfill the certification or licensing requirements in Alabama or whatever state you choose to practice in.

Sonographer Online Programs

student attending online sonography class in Elkmont ALAs aforementioned, virtually all ultrasound tech schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can receive a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either held in an on campus laboratory or at an authorized off-campus facility. Clinical training can often be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Elkmont AL hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the balance of the training and classes can be attended online in your Elkmont home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that keep working while getting their degrees. Plus online programs are often less expensive than on campus alternatives. Expenditures for study materials and commuting can be lessened as well. But similarly as with every sonography school you are reviewing, make sure that the online program you choose is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree could be the right choice for you.

What to Ask Ultrasound Technician Programs

Questions to ask Elkmont AL ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have decided on the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of evaluating and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Elkmont AL area. Naturally location will be important if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier also. But there are additional variables that you must also take into account, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they offer internships. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each sonographer school before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Schools Accredited? The majority of ultrasound technician colleges have acquired some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still important to make sure that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous evaluation of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Elkmont AL employers will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry-level positions.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Find out if the sonogram tech programs you are evaluating have associations with Elkmont AL clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent manner to receive practical training in a clinical setting, they are also a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help students and graduates develop professional connections in the Elkmont medical community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that first job in a new field can be difficult without support. Ask if the sonographer schools you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Alabama healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the college they choose will need to be within travelling distance of their Elkmont AL home. Individuals who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit far in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a smaller class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  college you finally choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Elkmont AL area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.
