So it’s extremely important that you investigate each school so that you can evaluate and compare your alternatives. But just where does one start? A number of potential students will begin by searching for schools that are within driving distance of their homes and then by comparing tuition. Certainly location and cost must be considered when making a decision, but there are additional critical factors as well. Such as, if the ultrasound technician schools are accredited or if they provide internship programs. These and other qualifiers will be addressed more in depth later in this post. Sonographer Work Summary

Double Springs AL ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. While a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority practice in Double Springs AL clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily job duties of a sonogram technician can involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying necessity for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely evaluate the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Offered

Double Springs AL ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician enrollees have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually involve about 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to finalize. Another option for those who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to keep in mind is that almost all ultrasound technician programs do have a clinical training element as part of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by participating in an internship program which many schools sponsor through Double Springs AL clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to comply with the certification or licensing requirements in Alabama or whatever state you choose to practice in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Schools

student attending online sonography class in Double Springs ALAs previously mentioned, nearly all sonogram technician colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus laboratory or at an approved off-campus facility. Practical training can typically be fulfilled through an internship at a local Double Springs AL hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the balance of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Double Springs home. This is especially beneficial for those students that continue working while getting their degrees. Plus online colleges are frequently more affordable than on campus options. Expenses for commuting and study materials may be reduced also. But similarly as with any sonography school you are looking at, confirm that the online program you choose is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes may be the ideal choice for you.

Points to Ask Sonogram Tech Programs

Questions to ask Double Springs AL ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of assessing and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You will first probably want to decide whether you will access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Double Springs AL area. Of course location will be significant if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification as well. But there are additional factors that you should also take into consideration, such as if the schools are accredited and if they provide internship programs. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each sonographer college prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Programs Accredited? The majority of ultrasound technician schools have obtained some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive assessment of their teachers and educational materials. If the school is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Double Springs AL employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level positions.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Ask if the sonogram tech programs you are reviewing have relationships with Double Springs AL hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great manner to get hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may assist graduates and students establish professional relationships in the Double Springs health care community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without support. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Alabama healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the school they select will need to be within driving distance of their Double Springs AL residence. Individuals who have opted to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that prefers to sit way in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  school you finally choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Double Springs AL area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.
