Sonographer Work Description

Creola AL ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. While a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Creola AL clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily work duties of an ultrasound technician can involve:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying necessity for further testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely evaluate the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Available

Creola AL ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician enrollees have the choice to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally involve about 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to complete. Another option for those who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to bear in mind is that most ultrasound technician schools do have a clinical training component as part of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which many schools sponsor through Creola AL hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to comply with the certification or licensing prerequisites in Alabama or whichever state you decide to practice in.

Sonographer Online Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Creola ALAs previously mentioned, almost all sonogram tech colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can receive a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either held in an on campus lab or at a sponsored off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can usually be satisfied through an internship at a local Creola AL outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the balance of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Creola home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that keep working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online programs are frequently less costly than on campus options. Expenses for commuting and study materials may be lessened as well. But just as with any sonography program you are reviewing, make sure that the online program you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes could be the right option for you.

Points to Ask Sonogram Tech Programs

Questions to ask Creola AL ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can start the procedure of reviewing and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You may first want to decide whether you will attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Creola AL area. Obviously location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are additional things that you must also take into consideration, such as if the schools are accredited and if they offer internship programs. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonography college prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Programs Accredited? A large number of ultrasound tech schools have earned some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still imperative to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed examination of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Creola AL employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Offered? Find out if the sonogram technician programs you are assessing have relationships with Creola AL hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great way to obtain hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are additionally a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help graduates and students form professional relationships in the Creola healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that first job in a new field can be challenging without support. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are assessing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Alabama healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the school they choose will need to be within driving distance of their Creola AL home. Those who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit way in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with several of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the sonographer  program you finally choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you choose to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Creola AL area, verify that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family obligations.
