Sonogram Tech Work Summary

Clio AL ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Although many work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most practice in Clio AL hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily job tasks of an ultrasound tech can include:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining need for further testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently gauge the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Available

Clio AL ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually require about 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finalize. Another alternative for those who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to consider is that most ultrasound technician schools do have a clinical training element as a portion of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which numerous schools set up through Clio AL clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to fulfill the certification or licensing requirements in Alabama or whatever state you elect to work in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Schools

student attending online sonography class in Clio ALAs earlier discussed, almost all sonogram tech schools have a practical component to their programs. So although you can receive a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either held in an on-campus laboratory or at an approved off campus facility. Practical training can often be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Clio AL hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the remainder of the classes and training may be attended online in your Clio home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that continue working while earning their degrees. Plus online schools are often more affordable than on-campus options. Costs for commuting and study materials may be lessened also. But just as with every ultrasound tech program you are reviewing, check that the online school you select is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes may be the right choice for you.

What to Ask Sonogram Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Clio AL ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can start the procedure of reviewing and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Clio AL area. Certainly location will be important if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification as well. But there are additional variables that you must also take into consideration, for example if the programs are accredited and if they provide internship programs. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each sonography school before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Programs Accredited? The majority of sonogram tech colleges have received some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still crucial to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous review of their instructors and educational materials. If the program is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Clio AL health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Ask if the sonogram tech schools you are assessing have associations with Clio AL hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific manner to get practical training in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help graduates and students form professional relationships in the Clio health care community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will undoubtedly wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new field can be challenging without support. Ask if the sonographer programs you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Alabama healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the college they choose will need to be within commuting distance of their Clio AL home. Individuals who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit way in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with several of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program also.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the sonographer  college you ultimately choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you decide to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Clio AL area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family obligations.
