Sonogram Tech Work Description

Cardiff AL ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority practice in Cardiff AL hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily job functions of an ultrasound tech may consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining need for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely assess the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education training on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Offered

Cardiff AL ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician enrollees have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally require about 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to complete. Another option for individuals who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to bear in mind is that almost all ultrasound technician colleges do have a clinical training component as a portion of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which many colleges organize through Cardiff AL hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to satisfy the certification or licensing prerequisites in Alabama or whichever state you decide to practice in.

Online Sonographer Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Cardiff ALAs previously mentioned, almost all ultrasound tech colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can receive a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either held in an on campus lab or at an approved off campus facility. Clinical training can usually be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Cardiff AL hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the remainder of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Cardiff home. This is especially convenient for those students that continue working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online colleges are frequently less costly than on-campus alternatives. Expenses for commuting and study materials may be reduced as well. But just as with any sonography college you are looking at, check that the online school you choose is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal choice for you.

Questions to Ask Sonography Schools

Questions to ask Cardiff AL ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of assessing and comparing sonogram technician schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you will attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Cardiff AL area. Obviously location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier also. But there are other variables that you must also take into account, for instance if the schools are accredited and if they offer internships. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are a few questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech college before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Colleges Accredited? The majority of sonogram technician colleges have acquired some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still imperative to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive review of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Cardiff AL employers will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry-level openings.

Are Internships Offered? Ask if the ultrasound tech colleges you are assessing have associations with Cardiff AL hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent way to obtain practical training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Cardiff health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that first job in a new profession can be challenging without support. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Alabama healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the college they choose will have to be within commuting distance of their Cardiff AL residence. Those who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that prefers to sit far in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the sonographer  college you finally select can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Cardiff AL area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family obligations.
